A study in light

Mapping.
Existence entrusted us with a new collection of wide band rings, a project we interpreted together with Federico Cavicchioli. Their surface is not smooth: it is carved with the orographic mapping of mountain ranges in Saudi Arabia, the relief of real terrain reinterpreted in gold. Diamonds are set along that relief not as decoration but as geographic markers, coordinates on an imagined map.
Reflection.
When we first held the rings, we noticed that the irregular, carved surface caught light in a way a smooth band never could. Reflections did not simply bounce, they scattered, multiplied, drew shapes of their own. The object was holding more than its own design.
Darkness.
We brought the rings into total darkness. A single ray of light, precisely aimed. It met the engravings, the polished gold, the stones, and scattered around them a constellation of its own making.
Orbit.
What emerged was no longer a ring. Halos, trails, coronas. A comet in motion, a sun, a planet circled by rings of its own.
The design was no longer held inside the metal. Carried by light, it had expanded beyond the ring, into the space around it.
A map of Saudi mountains, compressed into a few centimetres of gold, radiating outward as something cosmic.
We named the work Keplero.
